Collection: Memento Mori
The phrase “Memento Mori” has its roots in the philosophers of classical Greek and Roman antiquity, and was particularly of value to the Stoics. The full expression of the phrase is "Memento mori, memento vivere", which means, "Remember death, that you might remember life".
Memento Mori jewelry has been worn for hundreds of years, and was very popular during the 16th & 17th centuries. The Victorians embraced this style as well, with pieces often worn to mourn the death of a loved one. Many pieces are heirlooms and are held in both private and public collections worldwide.
June Luna's versions of Memento Mori Jewelry offer a modern take on classic designs, using Fair Trade natural bone beads, freshwater pearls, natural wood and recycled sea glass beads. We use motifs of skulls, skeletons, and the proverbial grim reaper, most often in 18k gold plated talismans.
Every piece of jewelry in this collection of handmade necklaces, and other occasional pieces, is intended to bestow the wearer with awareness and gratitude for life. These unique statement pieces are a reminder to live fully, embrace the now, and to appreciate every day as a gift by remembering mortality.
